Bob Connor
Principal Engineer, QinetiQ

Bob Connor began his career with British Aerospace in 1977 having graduated from Manchester University with a degree in Physics and Electronic Engineering. His initial experience was in electronic design with particular application to closed loop control systems.

In 1989 he joined Thorn EMI as Engineering Project Manager for a gimballed 94 GHz antenna as part of the Multiple Launch Rocket System. In 1993 he transferred to the IRST/FLIR programme for the Eurofighter, taking up the post of Interface Manager for the UK/Italian/Spanish consortium.

In 1997 he joined DERA (now QinetiQ) as Technical Leader for Vetronics. He has represented the International Vetronics community as the UK member for the NATO Working Group on Vetronics and has been Chairman of the MilCAN Working Group since 2001.


Lt Col Merfyn Lloyd OBE
Science Advisor to Chief of Materiel (Land), Dstl

Merfyn Lloyd was appointed Science Advisor (SA) to Chief of Materiel (Land) (COM(L))in Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S) in October 2007 to provide direct support to COM(L) and his staff. In doing so, he covers the broad spectrum of the Land environment to bring together issues that are relevant to or need resolution at 3 star level. In addition, he provides technical direction to several DE&S pilots and projects.

Since joining DSTL in 2002, he has worked primarily in the Information Systems area on a wide range of projects that include intelligence support systems for current operations and future command and control systems as well as advising other Government Departments in an assurance and project recovery role. Prior to this appointment, he was SA to the Command Support and Information Systems (CSIS) IPT Leader with the aim of providing a coherent systems engineering approach to the acquisition of information systems, work now supporting several work strands in the MOD's development of Through Life Management processes and architectures.

Before joining DSTL, Merfyn served as a regular Infantry officer in the British Army alternating command with technical staff jobs that included a tour on the Directing Staff of the (then) Royal Military College of Science where he was instrumental in introducing an understanding of systems and systems engineering into the syllabus. Other work included developing the organisation, structure and equipment for the Infantry following Options for Change which set the requirement for infantry systems currently entering service.

Merfyn Lloyd graduated from Oxford University in 1971 and was made an OBE in 2000.


Keith Mowbray
Executive Vice President Business Development, Dytecna Ltd

A graduate Engineer, Keith Mowbray worked for the UK MoD for ten years on a wide range of projects and programmes within the now extinct Defence Research Agency. Upon leaving the MoD Keith entered commercial defence organisations working on the design and development of a range of monitoring technologies in the Aviation sector.

Moving into business development twenty years ago, Keith stayed in the defence sector offering strategic development to organisations in the UK and overseas. He has worked in the USA, Europe and Australia with a track record in developing opportunities in the defence market sectors for large prime contracting organisations and small to medium enterprises.

More recently, Keith joined Dytecna in 2001 helping the business grow dramatically and has been instrumental in the opening of the Dytecna Asia Pacific business in Melbourne Australia which now employs some 45 staff and is also focusing on the move into the USA in 2010.


Tony White
Director of Advanced Technology, Ultra Electronics

Tony White is Director of Advanced Technology at Ultra Electronics Electrics in Cheltenham where he has been based for the last 10 years. Tony began his career with the United States Air Force, working on avionics systems supporting the European taskforce, before moving into industrial automation which took him around the world on a variety of projects.

During his career at Ultra Electronics, he has become well known in the Land Systems community and sits on several industry working groups, including the Vehicle Systems Integrators and Generic Vehicle Architecture MoD sponsored forums. An expert in electronic systems architecture, Tony leads the R&D activities at the Cheltenham site, which provides a range of platform solutions including power management, computer networks and video systems for both Land and Air domains.
